A passion for beauty became a path to independence.
Lebo Braids Specialist began in 2017 with R200 for hair, a place beneath a tree and a love for helping people feel beautiful. Family and friends became the first clients, and those early appointments created the space to practise, improve and understand what mattered most to the women in the chair. Neat braids and a comfortable styling experience quickly became the foundation of the business. As clients shared their experiences with others, a small home-based service began to grow through trust, consistency and personal recommendations.
The journey developed around a practical need: women wanted protective styles that looked beautiful and lasted, with thoughtful attention to their hair and edges. During the first year, there was no shop or team, and WhatsApp provided a simple way to connect with clients and arrange appointments. Progress came through patient practice, listening to feedback and giving each client a reason to return. That commitment shaped Lebo Braids Specialist into a business where the details of an appointment matter just as much as the finished style.
As demand increased, the business expanded into gel nails and the Department of Manicure, followed by practical training through its Beauty School. Today, hair, beauty and education sit alongside one another, reflecting a belief that a useful skill can create both confidence and an opportunity to earn. The salon offers a place for clients to enjoy personal care, while the academy provides a setting in which aspiring beauty professionals can practise their craft, understand pricing and begin building relationships with clients of their own.
MORE THAN A BEAUTY BUSINESS
Skill, encouragement and opportunity are part of the same story.
The Beauty School teaches braiding alongside practical business and pricing guidance. Learning how to deliver a service is only one part of the journey; understanding its value and communicating clearly with clients also helps a new stylist take the first steps towards earning. Many past students now serve their own clients and generate income from the skills they have developed.
Through the salon and Department of Manicure, Lebo Braids creates paid work opportunities for other women. Training and everyday practice help team members strengthen their technique and develop confidence in a working beauty environment. This approach connects the growth of the business with the growth of the people who contribute their skills to it.
Support continues through conversations about aftercare, confidence and starting a small beauty business. Clients and students are encouraged to ask questions and understand the choices available to them. The goal is for each woman to leave with more than a finished hairstyle: useful knowledge, a stronger sense of possibility and belief in her ability to move forward.
